Novo Hamburgo

Based on the perseverance and strength of the German immigrant, Novo Hamburgo is an example of a united and hard working community. From the sweat and determination of these people a place of great prosperity and development was forged. With the growth of the leather and footwear industry, the city grew exponentially, making it one of the most populous cities in the state. Quality and talent transformed the old and quiet Hamburger Berg into the National Footwear Capital.

Today, Novo Hamburgo is the perfect city to invest in. An example of education for the country, the city has a qualified workforce, complete infrastructure, and a privileged location. Massive investments in projects, such as the expansion of the railway, new school construction, and health clinics, as well as the good times for the footwear industry, all leverage the city’s development. In an attempt to add quality to the service sector, City Hall makes more courses and training programs available to the populace.

NATIONAL FOOTWEAR CAPITAL - The leather-footwear industry is still very important to the local economy and for development. The proof of this is that Novo Hamburgo participates in the main trade shows of the industry and hosts exhibits that are a benchmark for the industry- highlighting the National Footwear Festival and the International Fair for Leather, Chemical Products, Components, Machines, and Equipment for Footwear and Tanneries (Fimec). The City sets up stands to make their presence known in other trade shows throughout the country such as Couromoda and Francal.

PROJECTS -The same projects that affected the formal labor market, helping increase the number of formal workers by 10,386 since 2009, also help improve the quality of life and add development opportunities for this city in the Sinos valley. With the expansion of the metro rail, for example, approximately 30 thousand new users will benefit. The extension of the current Line 1, that will connect Novo Hamburgo to Porto Alegre, will have 9.3 kilometers from the São Leopoldo station to the future Downtown Station (Novo Hamburgo). The investment is more that BRL 650 million, with funds from the Federal Government, through the PAC (Growth Acceleration Program).

ENVIRONMENT - Novo Hamburgo doesn’t only think about development. There are several projects that seek to preserve and restore the local ecosystem. In March a project was launched that will assist the full recovery of the Sinos River Basin that flows through our city. Aware of its role in cleaning the source that supplies water to a population of an estimated 1.5 million people, Novo Hamburgo began the largest sanitation project in the history of the Sinos valley. The project should increase the percentage of treated sewage from 2% to 80%. More that BRL 150 million will be invested in the project. The estimate is that in 18 months the city will treat at least 50% of its sewage, returning water to the Sinos Rio cleaner that the waters of the river itself.
